Magnets have two poles!
A north pole and a south pole.
They react together.
What happens to like poles?
Answer: Like poles repel or push away from each other.
What happens to opposite poles?
Answer: Opposite poles attract or come together.
Electricity
It's fun to build electrical circuits in class: both open and closed!
What is a circuit?
Answer: A circuit is the path along which electric charges move.
What are the parts of a circuit? Answer: There are 3 parts to a circuit:
There is a source of electricity (A battery
)
There is a path along which charges can move ( wires)
There is some object that uses the electricity (light bulb)
We are learning how to identify materials as being conductors or insulators.
A paper clip is a conductor. What are conductors?
Answer: a conductor allows the electricity to pass through it.
(metals)
An eraser is an insulator. What are insulators?
Answer: an insulator does not allow the electricity to pass through it.
(rubber, plastic, wood)
If we have time, we will build circuits using a switch.
Why does the light go out when you lift the switch?
Answer: A switch opens and closes the circuit.
- When it is closed, the light bulb glows.
- When it is open, the light bulb is out.
